Find That Something that Drives You!

Posted on Thursday, April 2, 2009 in Living Active

In today’s go-go-go lifestyle it seems like everyone is running around trying to keep their head above water.  Lately, (and it kills me) I’ve had a few back-and-forth emails with friends trying to schedule a time to catch up, only to find out that the earliest we can meet is weeks away. The key to maintaining a full and active life is not to give things up, but to balance it all.

You don’t want to look back on your life 50 years from now and realize that your great success has cost you your life.  Making time for friends and family is very important.  Making time for you is also very important.

For instance, I make it a point to make time for myself through my running, and my most recent hobby; photography.  Even if it’s only thirty minutes here and there, it’s important.  Through my love of photography I read and draw inspiration from Chase Jarvis.  Chase is a professional photographer out in Seattle and maintains an excellent blog.  (http://www.chasejarvis.com)

Recently I watched an excellent video on his blog called, “Laura’s Story.” It’s a great video that reminded me that you’ve got to make time for the things in life that you’re passionate about. Thanks Chase!

What are you passionate about?

Swimming in Smartwater

Posted on Tuesday, February 24, 2009 in Living Active

For the past 3 weeks I’ve been drinking about 6 bottles of Smartwater a day. First of all, I can honestly tell you that I love it.  The water is so pure that you barely know you’re drinking anything.  It’s light, refreshing, and simply good.  It’s a bit addicting too.

Another thing I’ve found is that hydrating yourself will make you feel more energetic throughout the day.  Forget the energy drinks, coffee, 5 hour energy, and now 6 hour energy (?!?).  Want to live an active life? Drink water!

Water is key to feeling on task and focused throughout your entire day.  Tomorrow, try foregoing your usual cup of coffee or tea and drink water.  I’ll bet you feel just as awake as you normally would. (I did.) I’m not saying to give up coffee - I love coffee and  I think it makes me a happier person, but I don’t think you should have to be dependent upon it.

Anyways, I digress.  The point is that Smartwater is damn good.  It’s also been a bit frustrating when you go out at night and they don’t let you bring in a Smartwater.  (I won’t mention names, you know who you are.) Yes, I know, it’s not cool to bring in food or drink to a restaurant or bar but if said establishment doesn’t serve it then why not? I’m still going to buy a drink and/or get some food. (Oo well…what can you do?)

What do you think? How much water do you drink a day? What energizes you throughout your day?

Gearing up for the holidays…and throughout the year.

Posted on Wednesday, December 17, 2008 in Living Active

Being the holiday season it seems that everyone is running around doing their holiday shopping for their loved ones and friends. I am no different and still have a few more gifts to buy.

Is it just me, or do others end up buying themselves gifts as they complete their holiday gift list? For example, I was at the Perfect Shopping Experience event last night at Ski Market hosted by Social Boston Sports and Perfect Vodka (I’ll blog about this later) and started looking at potential gifts for my sister. As I looked I found a sweet sweatshirt that I had to get for myself. (Very happy with it, by the way.)

So you’ve got to gear up with the right stuff if you’re going to be active during this winter season and why not take advantage of the holiday sales out there and buy for yourself? Here is my list of online retailers where you can get some of the best gear at pretty sweet prices.

  • http://www.evogear.com - Excellent deals all the time. Mostly surf, skate, ski, and board gear.

  • http://www.backcountry.com - These guys carry some of the best outdoor gear out there. Excellent quality.
  • http://www.steepandcheap.com - You’ve got to monitor this constantly changing site to get the deals.
  • http://www.whiskeymilitia.com - Similar to Steep and Cheap - you have to monitor it constantly to catch the deals.
  • http://www.naukabout.com - Naukabout doesn’t sell other brands only their own Naukabout lifestyle brand. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting the company’s founders and their brand is incredible. Naukabout is all about the enjoyment of life while staying comfortable and active.

Know of anything else out there? Let me know.

Hello and Welcome!

Posted on Monday, December 1, 2008 in Miscellaneous

Hey,

How’s it going? I’d like to welcome you to my blog and tell you a little about myself and why I decided to join the blogging community.

My name is Justin, and I’ve lived here, in the Boston area, my entire life. I’ve traveled around the country, to parts of Central America, Europe, and have lived in Vienna but have managed to settle back here in the beautiful city of Boston, which I call home. After playing sports all my life, organizing events at Bentley, marketing for Red Bull and graduating from Bentley College with a degree in Finance and Economics, I co-founded Social Boston Sports with a few friends while working at a Commercial Real Estate Lender when I was 22.

I’ve always believed in living an active lifestyle through sports, (individual, team, and adrenaline sports) meeting as many great people as possible, and taking advantage of what life has to offer. Social Boston Sports is a combination of all this and more!

So where did Social Boston Sports (SBS) come from?

After graduating from college I wanted to continue staying active in Sports Leagues, continue to meet new people, and get involved in the community. Meeting new people was easy; meeting new friends was a little harder. Getting involved in sports leagues was easy; finding them for reasonable prices was harder. Getting involved in the community was easy; deciding how do get involved was harder. Then it came to me…why not create a company that fostered an open and welcome community for young professionals (21-35) allowing people to get involved, stay active, while meeting new people? Social Boston Sports was born.

It’s called Social Boston Sports for a few reasons. Social because whether its a party, networking event, class, adventure weekend, or a sports league we design everything with a strong social aspect. Boston, well, I think you get that one. Sports, because there is no better way to get out and stay active while meeting new people! Social Boston Sports is the community for young professionals who live, work, and play in Boston!

Since founding the company, Social Boston Sports has grown from 50 of our friends to a rapidly growing 2,000 plus members. We have taken the full plunge and quit our day jobs making SBS what we do from sun-up to sun-down. We have hosted 100+ highly attended and successful events. We still have not ever looked back with any regret.

Throughout my blog I won’t really discuss Social Boston Sports in much detail other than how it is a part of my life. I will talk about what it’s like to live an active lifestyle here in Boston, what I believe living a successful life means, and my adventures and experiences living in Boston while starting a company.

Cheers,

Justin
